We’re delighted to announce that ENGIE UK’s Condate Biogas, Gorst Energy, and Sustainable Energy Generation (SEG) plants have been awarded certification to International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) standards regarding biofuels for the biomethane injected into the grid.

Achieving certification involved an extensive audit of all operations and supply chains across ENGIE UK’s sites, including how feedstock for the anaerobic digestion (AD) process is sourced and managed to generate and inject biomethane.

ISCC is a global certification system for implementation of the Renewable Energy Directive (2009/28/EC) (RED II). Being ISCC certified confirms our compliance to the RED II. The certification also promotes several of our core values, including:

  • Traceable supply chains
  • Protection of high biodiversity habitats
  • Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions

The audit highlighted how we are exemplary in our integration with local farm businesses, which creates a circular economy. Our local energy production is an advantage when compared with other green energy, such as biofuel, which often involves shipping feedstock internationally and can lead to deforestation.

“ISCC certification is a fantastic milestone for us. It’s showcased the great work we do to really build local farm businesses into our supply chains. We’ve always believed in working together with farms and communities so that everyone benefits from green energy production through AD.”

– Charles Kane, Sustainability Director at ENGIE UK

ENGIE UK selected DoubleHelix to be its ISCC Certification Body: EnviroSense provided technical expertise.

“We are very impressed by the processes employed by the ENGIE UK plants and how they have integrated sustainable farming businesses into their supply chain. ENGIE UK are a fine example of how well structured AD supply chains underpin the circular economy.”

Darren Thomas, DoubleHelix Director

ISCC certification is by no means a common achievement – only nine other biogas companies in the UK have been certified so far.

We’re elated that our success in generating local, sustainable green energy has been recognised by the ISCC and we look forward to continuing to power UK homes and businesses.
