About ENGIE

ENGIE Group is a leader in the transition to renewable energy, operating Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plants across Europe including the UK. As well as having decades of collective experience in the sector, we have a strong track record in safely operating plants to the highest standards. We specialise in providing local communities with renewable energy through AD plants and are highly committed to being a responsible business supporting the local communities where we operate.

ENGIE UK is part of ENGIE Group, successfully operating several plants across the South West of England, supplying green energy to local homes and businesses.

Latest news

Following the consultation we expect to submit a planning application to North Yorkshire Council for consideration in the Autumn.

Should the application be approved, we anticipate starting to build the facility in Summer/Autumn 2025, with a target for it to be operational by Autumn 2026.

What is anaerobic digestion (AD)?

Anaerobic Digestion (AD) is a tried and tested treatment for organic and naturally biodegradable materials. They are blended to form a feedstock and fed into a large, fully sealed tank (a digester).

The tank doesn’t contain oxygen but is filled with naturally occurring micro-organisms and bacteria. This mixture is heated and gently stirred for several days enabling the bacteria to break down the feedstock.

During this process, the material produces a gas called biogas which is captured and sent to a storage dome. From here, the gas is used to generate renewable gas and electricity – a low carbon and renewable alternative to natural gas.

As well as green energy, the process also creates a natural biofertiliser. This is organic and rich in nutrients, which is good for soil structure and crop growth. By using this on their land, farmers can reduce their reliance on inorganic fertilisers, which can be expensive, carbon intensive to produce and sometimes in short supply

The site

We are planning the facility on an area of land east of the A162, west of the Sherburn-in-Elmet railway line, north of the South Milford railway line and south of the existing AD.

As well as specific site characteristics the location has been chosen for several reasons, including its proximity to the national gas grid network and the availability of local agricultural feedstock, coupled with a need for managing agricultural wastes that are currently spread to land. There is also enough land to allow for mitigation to ensure residents and other local receptors will not be detrimentally impacted and biodiversity net gain can be achieved.

Have your say

At our existing sites we’ve forged good relationships with our farming partners and the surrounding communities. We’re committed to working with local residents and businesses as we bring forward our plans for Sherburn in Elmet.

Speak to our team and leave any comments or questions you may have on our consultation questionnaire. Make sure to get your comments in by 31st October 2024 for our team to consider.
